Emerging from the 2024 Bronze Collective Theatre Fest's enlightening 'Black Theater in Rochester: A Panel Discussion,' fondly referred to as the 'Black Theater Town Hall,' emerged an actionable endeavor to serve the community further: Third Thursdays. Each Third Thursday of the month, three complimentary offerings will address various gaps within the Black Theater Community, including the imperative to bolster the presence of tech and non-performance professionals.
Among these initiatives is the introduction of monthly 'table reads,' featuring diverse works ranging from new creations to local gems, national treasures, and timeless classics. These readings serve a dual purpose: They acquaint audiences with a broader spectrum of playwrights and their works while fostering a deeper appreciation for the distinctive themes and styles that define them. Additionally, they allow audiences to revel in the richness of local talent, offering a platform for regional playwrights and actors to shine.
Complementing these readings are rolling auditions, which provide an inclusive platform for aspiring performers to showcase their skills and for audiences to engage directly with the creative process. Adopting a 'popcorn style' audition format ensures that all participants can inhabit a multitude of roles, fostering a dynamic and collaborative atmosphere.
The Bronze Collective's Third Thursday initiative aims to elevate awareness of Black playwrights, cultivate a vibrant community of performative talent, and nurture the growth of technical and non-performative expertise. Through these endeavors, we enrich the cultural landscape and empower individuals to actively participate in and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Black theater.
